The Story

Scamp III resides with the Fanning family on Stoney Lake. She was refurbished a number of years ago, giving her a    fibreglass bottom which, at the time, served its purpose. Now, after regular use, Scamp III is ready for a complete    restoration which will involve returning her bottom to a traditional double plank bottom. The fibreglass job had    preserved the boat's bottom to perfection, however the workmanship was very poor, and had been brought up lower    sides of the the hull much further than necessary. Scamp III will be ready to hit the sunny shores of Stoney in the    Spring of 2009.

Before:

Close up of condition of hull's varnish before restoration begins; mostly sound, but well    weathered.

Close up of front deck shows weathered appearance Scamp was in when she arrived:

After stripping and cataloguing the hardware, and interior, the motor (a 300 hp. 440 cu in. Chrysler) was removed and    taken to Peterborough Automotive for assessment and necessary repairs.

Then the first task at hand was to flip the Shepherd onto a cradle in order to start stripping the old fibreglass.

Flipped!

Ready to take out to have anti-foul paint sandblasted off fibreglass bottom

During:

Ready to grind off old fibreglass:

The grinding and prying begans ... beyond a doubt the messiest job ever performed in the shop!

Centre keel was extremely banged up but in good condition, so 1/4 in. was planed off,

and laminated a new piece overtop.

Removed old caulking and installed 5200 Marine caulking and cotton between keel and garboard as was done originally (larger gap here)

Some of the transom battens were split and needed replacing:

Both sides of planking at the chine needed to be replaced due to the fibreglassing doing damage. The 2 planks above the bottom plank had gotten damp (under the spray rail), and were soft and punky... and had to be replaced. Two coats of penetrating S1 sealant was applied to the bottom.

Two coats of anti-fouling paint applied to bottom (with one more to go before flipping back upright).....Mahogany plugs for stainless steel screw holes all fabricated and inserted into new planking:

February '09 - Scamp is ready to be upright again. Chrome is sent out to Cambridge Chrome, while engine rebuild begins at Peterborough Automotive.

new transom and plugs

(One of) The beautiful features of this year of Shepherd Boats is the attractive curvature of the transom, both from port to starboard, as well as from topside to keel. Stunning!
