"One Boat at a Time"
1937, 14 ft Custom Homebuilt, "Wood n Fit"
BOAT HISTORY
This charming homebuilt boat was built in 1935. The previous owner, whose father built it, was just eight years old when it was launched. Originally an inboard with an external rudder, it was modified in the mid-1950s with a transom bracket to mount an outboard motor. A windshield was added, and steering was moved to the front, making it a very different boat.
The current owner, a longtime lake neighbour of the owner (who is now 94 years old), was thrilled to acquire this nostalgic little vessel and brought it to us to discuss a full restoration. Their enthusiasm for the boat was contagious, so discussions ensued. After studying the boat, John decided to relocate the steering to the rear and shorten the front deck, creating more interior space without compromising the boat’s vintage charm.
The restoration included mahogany decks with ash covering boards, elegantly curved coaming, a mahogany transom, a new epoxy bottom, beautiful grated flooring, custom caned seat backs, and all hardware rechromed, maintaining an authentic 1930s style.
One of the most memorable moments of this project was when the current owners brought the original owner to see this lovingly restored boat. Seeing his joy as he admired the transformation was a highlight for everyone—and he thoroughly enjoyed both the boat and the welcoming atmosphere of The Boat Shop.
