"One Boat at a Time"
1937, 30 ft. Morris Long Deck Launch, "Last Call"
BOAT HISTORY
This beautiful launch was built in Hamilton, Ontario by Morris Boatworks, and spent her life in the Muskoka region. Morris Boats were known from the days of prohibition as the primary boat builder for many local bootleggers of the era. They notably custom-made boats for well-known Canadian bootlegger, Ben Kerr - whose million dollar empire, a fascinating tale, is depicted in the historical fiction, "Whiskey and Ice." (Worth the read!)
In 1937 a prominent Toronto doctor, who summered in the Muskoka Lakes wanted "the fastest pleasure boat in the Muskokas". Morris Boatworks' reputation from the prohibition days soon landed them the commission of custom building this boat for him.
In the spring of 2009, an acquaintance of John's contacted us to see if we knew someone who would give this beautiful vessel a new restored life and treat her with the love and respect a fine vessel such as this demands.
We immediately thought of one of our customers who had mentioned that he’d like a special project to partner with John, that he could use at his summer cottage on Stoney Lake. So, the deal was made, and “Florabel” was moved to our shop for a full, extensive restoration. A five year project, between other boats, this gorgeous vessel was launched in 2018 in time to attend the ACBS’s Gravenhurst Antique and Classic Boat Show, under her new name, “Last Call”.
